Kart Gear Ratio Calculator

Enter front and rear sprocket teeth, tyre diameter and peak RPM to get the gear ratio, rollout per wheel revolution, distance per engine rev and theoretical speed. Cards show what one rear tooth either way does to the numbers, and in-stock sprockets from Spares Inventory appear as tap chips. Works offline.

Gear Ratio is the gearing calculator in the AVB RaceLabs Pit Kit. You give it four numbers: front (engine) sprocket teeth, rear (axle) sprocket teeth, tyre diameter in millimetres and peak RPM. It returns the ratio (rear teeth divided by front teeth, shown as x.xx : 1), rollout per wheel revolution (π × tyre diameter), distance travelled per engine revolution and theoretical speed in km/h at the RPM you entered.

At the track, most gearing debates are about one tooth. Below the main result, three cards set your current rear sprocket next to one tooth more (marked "more drive") and one tooth fewer ("more top end"), each with its own ratio and speed. You can see what the change does before you pull the chain off.

If you keep a Spares Inventory in the Pit Kit, the tooth counts of sprockets you have logged with stock show up under "Rear sprockets you own" as tap chips. Tap 80T and the calculator sets the rear sprocket to 80, so you compare gearing that is actually in the van.

The speed figure is theoretical. It ignores drag, slip and the clutch, and the app says so: treat it as a comparison between gearings, not a speedometer. Everything is calculated on the phone, so the tool works in the paddock with no signal. It is free with no cap and needs no sign-in.

How to use it

  1. 01Open Pit Kit and choose Gear Ratio under Calculators.
  2. 02Enter Front teeth, Rear teeth, Tyre diameter (mm) and Peak RPM. Defaults of 11 / 78, 277 mm and 14000 rpm are filled in to start.
  3. 03Tap Recalculate, or tap a chip under "Rear sprockets you own" to try a sprocket from your box.
  4. 04Read Ratio, Rollout (per wheel rev), Distance per engine rev and Speed at your RPM.
  5. 05Check the "One tooth either way" cards to compare more drive against more top end.

Questions

How do you calculate a kart gear ratio?
Divide the rear (axle) sprocket teeth by the front (engine) sprocket teeth. An 11-tooth front with a 78-tooth rear gives 78 ÷ 11 = 7.09 : 1. The Gear Ratio tool does this for you and also works out rollout and theoretical speed.
What does one more tooth on the rear sprocket do?
A bigger rear sprocket raises the ratio, which the app labels "more drive", and lowers the theoretical speed at your peak RPM. One tooth fewer does the opposite ("more top end"). The tool shows both options next to your current gearing.
Is the calculated top speed accurate?
It is a theoretical figure from ratio, tyre diameter and RPM. It ignores drag, slip and the clutch, so use it to compare gearings rather than as a true speed reading.
